The operational priorities of the Elektrėnai Complex (the EC), the Kruonis Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Plant (the KPSHP) and the Kaunas Algirdas Brazauskas' Hydroelectric Power Plant (the KHPP) are oriented towards the respect and responsibility for the environment and towards the careful use of natural resources. We seek to apply new, environmentally-friendly techniques to the operational process, as defined in the legal acts and rules, and preventive measures to reduce the negative environmental impact.

Safe usage of the environmentally-harmful substances, waste management, adjustment of energy sector premises and equipment to the landscape and assurance of the appropriate variations in the water levels of the Kaunas Reservoir and Nemunas river below the KHPP are the most important environmental issues for Lietuvos Energijos Gamyba.

Waste management

Waste from the EC, the KHPP and the KPSHP is managed by enterprises with special licenses for this kind of activity. The main types of hazardous waste are: mould from liquid fuel, insulating material containing asbestos, fabric with oil contamination, filter materials, luminescent lamps, oil, etc.

In Elektrėnai complex, 39 t of biofuel ash, 132 t of sand waste, 440 t of liquid fuel ash, 7 t of adsorbent waste, 1.5 t of ethylene glycol waste, 22 t of waste of chemicals that are unsuitable for use, 16.35 t of activated carbon waste, 10.57 t of ion exchange resins, 1168 t of construction and insulation materials containing asbestos, 5 t of plastic and rubber waste, 5 t of paper and cardboard waste, and 2.5 t of waste wood were transferred to waste managers for recovery; 763 t of electrical equipment waste, 3300 t of ferrous metals scrap waste, 134 t of copper scrap waste, and 38 t of aluminium scrap waste were sold to metal waste buyers in 2015. Household waste collected in the territory of the facility is removed by a specialised contractor. 150 t of sulphite waste were moved to the Obeniai land plot.

Household waste collected in the territory of the Kruonis PSHP is removed by a specialised contractor. In 2015, 33.28 t of household waste were removed. In 2015, the Kruonis PSHP transferred for recovery: 21.27 t of hazardous waste (including 9.5 t of oily water, 0.04 t of fluorescent tubes, 0.035 t of used batteries, 0.4 t of oily wiping cloths, 0.28 t of electrical and electronic equipment, 11 t of petroleum products sludge, 0.01 t of oil filters), and 0.46 t of non-hazardous waste; it also sold 12.66 t of ferrous metals scrap waste.

In 2015, the Kaunas A. Brazauskas HPP transferred 0.158 t of hazardous waste and 0.88 t of non-hazardous waste for recovery; it also transferred 2.12 t of ferrous metals scrap waste. Household waste collected in the territory of the facility is removed by a specialised contractor; approximately 6.48 t of household waste formed in 2015.

Paper and cardboard waste in all power plants is transferred to companies that recycle such waste.

Managing of waste waters

Norms, permitted by the Control Permission of Integrated Prevention and Control for Stationary Sources of Pollution (waste waters) and the Regulation on Waste Water Management, are observed constantly. Technical control of rainwater and cleaning equipment of domestic wastewaters has been performed (regenerating and changing of filters, transportation of silt, etc.). These services are purchased from specialized companies.

Preventive measures to ensure a safe environment

Requirements, defined by the Control Permission of Integrated Prevention and Control for air, surface waters, underground waters, soil pollution monitoring and security protection measures have been implemented in the EC, the KHPP and the KPSHP. Accounting for stationary and mobile sources of pollution, accounting for taxable goods and packages, and chemical substances is done regularly. Furthermore, an internal management audit is performed for chemical materials and preparations.

During the reconstruction of the KHPP, devices for blocking and collecting waste from water before entering hydro units were installed and are in use. Waste that may potentially enter the Nemunas via the pouring barrage is collected and transported to a dump.

Naturally, investment projects have set environmental requirements for constructing and reconstruction of equipment. A necessary condition for purchasing services is the contractor‘s responsibility for managing constructional waste.
